Volvo will show the world the updated version XC90 crossover on what the company is calling “90/90” day, which for the rest of us is just September 4. The day will also “mark a big moment in the launch of the EX90,” which is the second “90.” But what was far more interesting was the cryptic teaser Volvo tacked onto the end of its announcement, suggesting that “there might be a surprise or two in store…” for us too. Oh well, anyway.
The announcement was accompanied by an equally cryptic teaser image that appears to show the hoods of the EX90 (top/right) and XC90 (bottom/left). There’s not much to see here, aside from the distinctive hood creases and some detailing in the headlights. From what we can tell, the updated XC90 will wear a different take on the “Thor’s Hammer” LED signature. Everything else is mere speculation. While Volvo hasn’t officially set a date for the XC90’s discontinuation, we’d expect this to be the last major update before it gets ditched in favor of its all-electric sibling. It’s been on the shelf since Volvo originally unveiled the EX90 in 2022.
And as for Volvo surprises? We don’t really know what to expect. With the EX30 launch goes smoothly much longer than expected, it is unlikely that Volvo will be able to announce any major new product introductions for the US market. We can consider the possibility of a number of Pole Star Engineered variants of existing models; Volvo has already shown that it is willing to bring these to market crossesso why stop now? Anyway, we only have to wait a week. Plus, you can watch the whole thing live on Volvo’s 90/90 Day microsite.
