Samsung is targeting AI as the future of mobile devices. We’ve seen the software with the recent Galaxy AI features, but the hardware “could be radically different from Samsung’s existing phones,” according to TM Roh, the president of Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) unit.

Roh spoke to the Australian Financial Overview and said that the “lion’s share” of Samsung MX’s research and development is focused on so-called AI phones.

What might they look like? TM Roh didn’t go into specifics, but the “radically different” comment suggests the ubiquitous rectangle is on its way out. Roh did mention that AI phones would be “more mobile,” which doesn’t necessarily mean smaller — they could also have bigger screens and more sensors.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold6 take advantage of their S Pen support, as AI can convert a rough sketch into a detailed image. AI isn’t just used for image manipulation and creation, though, but also for audio, text, video, 3D, and just about anything else you can think of.

Samsung is integrating its headphones into its AI toolset (with language translation), so accessories could be part of the strategy. Also, foldable phones are uniquely suited to use their dual displays for things like interpreter mode.

There are a number of AI devices on the market right now, but none of them are successful, so perhaps they’re not a good indication of what an “AI phone” should look like. This also means that Samsung is venturing into uncharted territory, so it’s no wonder that a huge R&D push is needed.
