Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch7 And Galaxy Watch Ultra yesterday at the Unpacked event. They both apparently lack the Wireless PowerShare feature, which allowed previous Galaxy Watches to wirelessly charge from the back of your phone. But now, that’s no longer possible with these new watches.
The culprit is the new BioActive sensor array that Samsung has developed for its latest generation of smartwatches, which has a new design that has caused Samsung to change the shape of the back glass on the new watches. The change increases the distance between the watch’s internal wireless charging coil and the wireless charger itself, and it’s too far away for the feature to continue working with your phone.
On the other hand, Samsung explains that the new sensor suite is more accurate than previous models, allowing you to “assess health-related data points that were previously unsupported and provide more reliable measurements during prolonged or specialized exercises.”
If you’re wondering whether you can charge the Watch7 and Watch Ultra on a traditional wireless charging pad, the answer is yes, but due to the aforementioned increased distance between the coil and the glass, charging will be slow and will generate heat. As such, Samsung recommends only using the wireless charger that comes in the box for best results.
