Netflix is discontinuing its Basic plan in the United States and France, eliminating its cheapest ad-free plan and pushing users to the more expensive Standard or a cheaper ad-supported tier.
The announcement came via the company’s Q2 financial report, where the company revealed that the change was first being tested in the UK and Canada. Users from several countries have already the change reportedwhich now seems to be official.
The $11.99 Basic plan in the US was removed for new users, but Netflix allowed paying customers to keep it. Now they’re being pushed to a new plan too, and the cheaper option is an ad-enabled plan for $6.99.
The cheapest version without ads costs $15.49 (Standard) or $22.99 (Premium, which lets you watch and download on more supported devices and stream in 4K where available).
Netflix revealed two more changes in its quarterly report. It is now testing ads that appear on the Pause screen (for ad-supported tiers only) and will stop measuring its success in new subscribers, instead measuring growth by regional revenue.
