Meta is said to have stopped working on his Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development began last November and is expected to be released sometime in 2027.
That’s not happening anymore. The reason for the project’s cancellation apparently has to do with the fact that the headset used MicroOLED displays, which made it very expensive, much more expensive than Meta’s original goal of keeping the cost under $1,000.
The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro isn’t exactly a runaway success, either. And if even Apple can’t turn an expensive device into a bestseller, that might be an indication that there simply isn’t a big enough market for such high-end headsets to warrant two competing models.
Regarding the news of the La Jolla headset cancellation, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said said: “We always have many prototypes in development. But we don’t put them all into production. We continue with some, we leave others behind. These kinds of decisions are made all the time, and stories based on talk about one individual decision will never tell the real story.”
While the high-end headset may have been canceled, Meta is still working on a more affordable Quest, codenamed Ventura, which could launch before the end of the year. Meta is also expected to unveil new AR glasses next month, while the Quest 4 is expected to arrive in 2026.
