Android tablets haven’t seen nearly as much success as Apple’s iPads, and Google’s products are included in that assessment. The company discontinued tablets in 2019 before launching the Pixel tablet in 2022 and then released last year, and now it looks like it’s ready to give up the form factor again.
According to a new report purportedly from “multiple industry sources close to the project”, Google has decided to cancel development of the project. Pixel tablet 3internally codenamed Kiyomi. The decision was apparently made last week, when all the teams involved found out. People who worked on the Pixel Tablet 3 have been transferred to other projects within Google.
So it looks like the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2 will be Google’s last tablet, at least for a while. The good news is that it may have an official first party keyboard caseunlike its predecessor. The bad news is that it will not have a successor.
This news clearly indicates that Google’s heart was not in the tablet world even this time. The company has strangely shied away from integrating useful tablet-specific features into Android, essentially leaving Apple with the entire market. But don’t worry about Google’s astonishing plan to compete with iPads Merge Chrome OS with Android And launch a laptop. We wish we made this stuff up. If anyone can gain some insight into Google’s strategy at this point, please let us know in the comments.
