The Volkswagen Passat is a name synonymous with reliability. When it comes to tuning culture, however, it is often overshadowed by its sportier siblings. Still, the Passat B1, especially in its estate form, holds a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate the charm of vintage German engineering.
This is the story of one such car, a 1979 Passat B1 Variant LS (Type 33), which has undergone a remarkable transformation under the care of two passionate owners.
The journey of this Passat started with Sweet Sticka well-known figure in the Polish custom car scene.
Przemek’s love for unique and classic cars led him to this rare find in Szczecin, Poland. Despite its rarity and the high prices that usually accompany old Passat variants, Przemek managed to get his hands on the B1 and immediately got to work. His vision was clear: a low, big-wheeled, eye-catching example built with an emphasis on stance style.
Under Przemek’s ownership, the Passat was fitted with a bespoke air suspension system from Air-Riders in Gliwice, featuring twin Viair 480C compressors, Metal Work valves and Rubena 130 airbags. This setup allowed the car to achieve an impressively low stance.
The Passat rolled on unique 17-inch wheels, made from 14-inch Mercedes-Benz W201 centers with RH ZW1 parts. A Kamei front bumper lip added a touch of aggression to the front end.
The interior remained original, apart from a steering wheel with Nardi wood rim, a Momo gear knob and a modified trunk layout with a period pressure gauge.
Przemek’s efforts did not go unrewarded. The car debuted at Ultrace 2018 (then Raceism) in Wrocław and took second place in the Classic Era category at the Tuning Kingz Fabryka event that same year.
Despite this immediate success, Przemek knew there was more potential to unlock, but fate had other plans. In 2020, the car found a new home with Arek.
Arkadiusz Niwiński has taken Przemek’s foundation and taken the car to new heights. Since the B1 was acquired, it has undergone a major overhaul to improve almost every aspect of the vehicle.
One of the standout features under Arek’s ownership are the custom 17-inch center-lock wheels. In addition to these wheels, the airride system was overhauled, making the Passat ride and handle better than ever. The car also received a fresh coat of paint.
Under the hood, several components have been removed for a sleeker look. Dual Weber carburetors, a custom camshaft and a custom exhaust system have been added, along with a Kamei air intake scoop and a unique hood that always turns heads.
Exterior enhancements continue with the addition of a roof box, aftermarket mirrors, and rear window louvers. The Kamei theme seen throughout the build continues to nod to Przemek’s original vision and fits perfectly with the new modifications.
Arek’s passion for the Passat shows no signs of diminishing, despite having several old-school VAG cars in his garage also vying for his attention. He has plans for an air-ride trailer to complement the estate – a project that promises to make this already unique Volkswagen even more special. Despite receiving several offers for the Passat, Arek is determined to keep it for many years to come and continue its stylish legacy.
In a car show world where the spotlight often falls on the more obvious choices, this Passat B1 Variant stands head and shoulders above the rest. It’s a rolling mix of heritage and Euro-style modifications. And while it continues to evolve, it’s clear that the estate car’s journey is far from over.
