Officially, the new Samsung foldables will be released on July 24 (Wednesday), although pre-orders may ship a few days earlier. This is more or less the last chance to get pre-order benefits for the two new Galaxy Z phones.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 costs $1,800 for the 512GB model (due to a free storage upgrade). Samsung is offering up to $1,200 in trade-in credit – the Z Fold5 is worth $1,200, the Z Fold4 is $1,000 and the Z Fold3 is $900. If you’re upgrading from, say, an old Ultra, the S24 Ultra is $900, while the S23 Ultra is worth $800.
If you don’t want to trade in, Amazon is also selling the Galaxy Z Fold6 for $1,800 for the 512GB model, which comes with a $300 Amazon gift card.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 (512GB) is down to $1,000 thanks to a $100 instant credit and a free storage upgrade. The trade-in offer is capped at $650 — you can get that for an S24 Ultra, Z Flip5 or Z Fold5. An older Z Flip4 trades in for $550, the Z Flip3 for $450.
The Galaxy Z Flip6 (512GB) costs $1,100 on Amazon, but comes with a $200 Amazon gift card, so the effective price could be lower than what Samsung is offering if you don’t trade in an old phone.
If you’re not a fan of foldables, you can get the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (12/512GB) for the same price as the Flip – $1,100. You get much better cameras with the Ultra plus the S Pen. Better battery life and faster charging too. The downside is that the S24 Ultra is a fairly large device.
You can also buy the Galaxy S24+. Its cameras are comparable to the Z Flip6 and Z Fold6, while it is a cheaper phone. The battery is also better.
We’re in the mood for some gaming, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer. The Viture One XR glasses are a compact way to carry a 120” virtual display. They have a single 1080p @ 60fps display per eye and have a myopia adjustment. There’s also an electrochromic film that can darken the glasses to reduce distractions.
You can simply plug them into a compatible phone with a USB-C cable – the Galaxy Z Fold6 and both S24 models bring their DeX interface to the fore (note: the Z Flip6 doesn’t have a video output). They also work with the iPhone 15, and devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Note: A Prime subscription is required for this offer.
The glasses are great for travel, but for at home something like the 34” Samsung Odyssey G85SB monitor would be a better choice. This curved 3440 x 1440px QD-OLED display runs at 175Hz (0.03ms response time) and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. The monitor features the Gaming Hub, which can handle game streaming (Xbox, Nvidia, etc.) without the need for a PC/console. This is also a smart TV, so all the usual Tizen features are available.
If you just want to use your current TV, but it doesn’t support native cloud gaming, you can get access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Streaming with a $30 Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. Just keep in mind that you’ll need a compatible controller.
An Xbox controller is fine (and also for gaming on the Viture glasses). But look at the Asus ROG Raikiri Pro, it’s like a Swiss army knife. It supports 3 modes: wired via USB-C, wireless via Bluetooth and wireless via 2.4GHz RF. There’s a built-in OLED screen that allows you to switch profiles: you can remap and customize the buttons. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack with an ESS DAC, so you can connect a wired headset.
